Lady Gaga voted AP Entertainer of the Year [by eleanor123]

The Lounge:: Lady Gaga voted AP Entertainer of the Year

NEW YORK (AP) — You might say that Lady Gaga's year really began in an egg louboutin heels
.
That's how she arrived at the Grammys in February, encased in a large, translucent pod carried by scantily clad dancers. When she "hatched" onstage, she effectively gave birth to "Born This Way," performing the eponymous lead single of her second studio album and anthem to self-acceptance. In 2011, the album would carry her around the world, where she rarely went unnoticed.
After a year of extravagant globe-trotting and relentless advocacy of tolerance, Lady Gaga has been voted Entertainer of the Year by members of The Associated Press.
There were 135 ballots submitted by U.S. news organizations that make up the AP's membership. Editors and broadcasters were asked to cast their ballots for who had the most influence on entertainment and culture in 2011.
"I am humbled and honored to be named 'Entertainer of The Year' by The Associated Press," Lady Gaga said in a statement Monday signed "Mother Monster Christian Louboutin shop
."
"My deepest gratitude to the broadcasters and journalists who've supported me over the years, and in turn, are now supporting the loves of my life: my fans. Thank you for believing in 'Born This Way.' May you continue to brave the dreams of Showbiz."
Lady Gaga narrowly edged out the late Apple founder Steve Jobs by three votes. Many others received numerous votes, including Taylor Swift, Charlie Sheen, Adele and the cast of "Harry Potter." Previous winners of the AP Entertainer of the Year include Betty White, Swift, Tina Fey and Stephen Colbert.
But it was Lady Gaga whose eminence in 2011 stood out most to voters. While accepting the best pop vocal album Grammy for her previous disc, "The Fame Monster," earlier this year, she said stardom was an adjustment for her.
"When I wrote 'Born This Way,' I imagined (Whitney Houston) was singing it because I wasn't secure enough in myself to imagine I was a superstar," she said.
When the album was released in May, 1.1 million copies sold in the first week, partly aided by a dramatic discount from Amazon, which sold it for 99 cents. But it was an industry-shattering moment because an extraordinary 60 percent of sales in the first week were digital downloads. Altogether, it outsold the next 42 albums on the Billboard chart combined. As of October, worldwide sales had surpassed 8 million copies Christian Louboutin heels
.
"One of my greatest artworks is the art of fame," the 25-year-old told "60 Minutes" earlier this year. "I'm a master of the art of fame."
Lady Gaga, whose real name is Stefani Germanotta, is prepping for a "Born This Way" tour. Her "Monster Ball Tour" was still going strong earlier this year, which went a long way toward making her, according to Forbes, the highest grossing female musician in 2011. The magazine, which compiled pretax income earned from May 2010 to May 2011, said Lady Gaga earned $90 million.
Paul Pronovost, editor of the Cape Cod Times, called Lady Gaga's "A Very Gaga Thanksgiving" — a bizarre ABC holiday special hosted by the singer — "a brilliant reach to mainstream America."
"Transcendent performers like Lady Gaga come around as often as Halley's Comet," says Pronovost. "She has that rare gift of sophisticated self-promotion, so outlandish at times you just can't look away" and the talent to back it up. "This is Madonna 4.0."
The concerts spawned an HBO special, which was nominated for five Emmys Awards and won one. Lady Gaga was a regular presence at award shows throughout the year. She won three Grammys in February, including best female pop vocal performance. She won two MTV Video Music Awards. She was recently nominated for three Grammys for next year's awards, including best album. This summer, her infamous meat dress — made of layers of Argentinian beef — was put on display at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
She visited the White House and appeared as the musical guest on "Saturday Night Live." She performed at former President Bill Clinton's 65th-birthday bash with an ode to Marilyn Monroe. She remained the person most followed on Twitter, with more than 17 million Little Monsters — or more people who live in Greece and Ireland combined. And for the mark of true fame, she was parodied by Weird Al Yankovic, who turned "Born This Way" into "Perform This Way."
She collaborated with a number of music legends, including Elton John ("Hello, Hello" for "Gnomeo & Juliet"), Tony Bennett ("The Lady Is a Tramp") and Cher ("The Greatest Thing"). She continually released ambitious videos, most recently the 13-minute epic "Marry the Night." It had 5 million views in less than 48 hours.
"She gets people talking," says Greg Retsinas, digital director of the Press Democrat of Santa Rosa, Calif. "She's a polarizing figure not just in music and fashion but in pop culture and society. In a recent week, I heard her referenced personally by my 9-year-old daughter, a prominent local CFO and an airline pilot, all glowingly."
With the help of the MacArthur Foundation and Harvard University, Lady Gaga also founded the Born This Way Foundation, a nonprofit focusing on youth empowerment and "issues like self-confidence, well-being, anti-bullying, mentoring and career development." She has spoken frequently about such issues. At EuroPride, a gay pride concert in Rome in June, she said, "We beckon for compassion, understanding and above all we want full equality now."
"I am a child of diversity," she said. "I am one with my generation."
Lady Gaga will be ringing in the New Year with typical showmanship. She'll be the featured guest on Dick Clark's annual "New Year's Rockin' Eve" special from New York City's Times Square. Meanwhile, Christmas shoppers can walk through the holiday display she designed at Barney's in New York: 5,500 square feet of bright colors, crazy shapes and a gigantic cartoon statue of the superstar herself.
9/11 drama 'Extremely Loud' hopes for a healing [by eleanor123]

The Lounge:: 9/11 drama 'Extremely Loud' hopes for a healing

NEW YORK (AP) — Emotions run high in "Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close," the boldest cinematic tackling of Sept. 11 yet.
It's a project fraught with obvious peril, with pitfalls of sentimentality, exploitation or, simply, audience reluctance. The source material, Jonathan Safran Foer's 2005 book, is far from normal Hollywood stuff. One of the first novels to take up the tragedy, it's inherently literary and experimental in its fractured storytelling, occasionally drifting by with just a few words on a page louboutin heels
.
But the film, directed by Stephen Daldry ("The Hours," ''The Reader") has opted to go for the jugular: to dive straight into grief and loss; to face the stark images of that day, and, hopefully, to emerge on the other side with healing and release.
"Some people might find the wound too big and that they can't go there — and they shouldn't go there," says Daldry. "Some people will find it cathartic. I had to follow my own instincts on it."
"Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close" is about an uncommonly bright 11-year-old boy, possibly with Asperger syndrome, named Oskar (Thomas Horn). A year after losing his father (Tom Hanks) on what he only calls "the worst day," Oskar tries to keep his memory of his father alive by searching across New York City for the lock of a mysterious key. His mother (Sandra Bullock) is seemingly left out of his search, but joining him is his grandmother's tenant and very possibly his grandfather (Max von Sydow), a speechless and mysterious old man.
Oskar's journey leads him irrevocably back to "the worst day," which, in flashbacks, is seen in the minute detail of everyday life, in heartbreaking phone calls from his father and in the most searing visuals. Depicted is the full panorama of the smoking towers in a perfect blue sky, and, in nightmare recollection, people plummeting to the ground.
"There was a big discussion in my own head about, 'Do I really want to see the twin towers at all?'" says Daldry. "There was a choice about, 'Do I want to see what happened to Tom Hanks?' I went, 'I literally cannot do that.' The idea of building an office Christian Louboutin shop
, the Windows of the World — I just couldn't do it."
Making the film — which Daldry can only summarize as "a challenging emotional experience" — has clearly left a mark on the British director and those that worked on it. Recalling a recent advance screening where a survivor from the south tower stood up and spoke afterward, Daldry cuts off and breaks for a smoke. There have been many rich, story-filled meetings already with children of parents killed on 9/11, with firefighters and with people who have lost a loved one.
The film is still fresh for Daldry. The seven-month production ended earlier this year, but just 10 days before a recent interview, he was still shooting — a small addition to make a scene in the Far Rockaways of Queens more understandable. On Sept. 11, 2001, he was cutting "The Hours" in New York with producer Scott Rudin. Bullock was staying at a hotel 20 blocks away with a clear view of the twin towers.
"I hope people are ready for it," says Bullock, herself welling up at times. "The movie-going experience of this with everyone in the room is therapy. And I hate the word therapy, but it's healing. It is the collective supporting each other in whatever they're grieving."
The film is making a late push toward audiences. Long viewed as an Oscar contender, Rudin ("The Social Network") kept the movie under wraps until very late in the year. It's an exceptionally heart-wrenching film, likely to be among the weepiest experiences at the movies in years and, therefore, likely to engender either ardent support or skeptical derision. Certainly, that the cast includes two of America's most beloved stars — Hanks and Bullock — should make the film more palatable.
Both audiences and filmmakers have shown reluctance for Sept. 11 stories. More than 10 years later, it's possible they're ready for a more ambitious engagement with the tragedy, after earlier mainstream movies such as "United 93" and "World Trade Center." This year also saw the long-delayed release of Kenneth Lonergan's post-9/11 "Margaret."
"Obviously, the subject matter is certainly what it's about to some extent," says screenwriter Eric Roth ("Forrest Gump," ''The Insider"). "But I think 'Extremely Loud & Incredibly Christian Louboutin heels
Close' is about something else. I think it's more about grief."
Roth said Foer was "nothing but a prince" about the adaptation, and that he helped with some aspects of the script, including the voiceovers. The film does away with a past storyline that runs through the novel.
Casting Oskar, the film's protagonist, was one of the biggest challenges for the filmmakers. The 13-year-old Horn, a newcomer to acting, was discovered after he was seen winning a kids episode of "Jeopardy!" But his performance has drawn raves, and in a recent interview with his father alongside, Horn was as sharp and as articulate as Oskar.
"Oskar's father is his only window on the world, you might say," says Horn. "His father is the only person who connects him to everyone else. And his father is the only other person he trusts. So when his father dies, the character needs to find a new way to relate to the world."
Daldry's film particularly succeeds as a life-affirming sensory experience, bright in color (he first wanted to shoot all the 9/11 material on IMAX, but settled for exaggerating the color instead), full of creative perspective (including tilt-shift photography) and layered sound (including Alexandre Desplat's score). Says Daldry: "I always knew the world for young Oskar was incredibly loud and extremely close, and the other way around."
Von Sydow, the legendary 82-year-old veteran of Bergman movies, was quite impressed with Horn, with whom he has all his scenes. He believes, though, that the film is ultimately about more than Sept. 11.
"To me, it's a wonderful story of hope, in a way, with this little boy who has a problem and somehow creates his own therapy in order to get out of this trauma," says von Sydow. "It's a film about hope, hope of survival and finding meaning with your life in spite of all of this that happens."
The Lounge:: Thinking Outside the Box on the Fourth Dimension
Once time was thought of as one dimensional, and space three dimensional. Relativity started changing people's minds about Space-time instead of the traditional Newtonian separation of time and space. Time is considered a fourth dimension. Time is represented upon a cartesian coordinate system, and scientists are exploring the possibilities of time travel.

In thinking of time as a fourth dimension, could we glimpse time from our third dimension reality? If a three dimensional object can cast a shadow upon a two dimensional object, is it possible for time to cast a shadow upon the third dimension?

The Lounge:: Salutations and Such
Welcome, Arcas! Being an INTJ and a female and a parent brings all sorts of challenges to the fore, doesn't it? My daughter is now in her 20's and we are quite close, but I know that there were many times when I was aware that others thought I acted too unattached. What I regarded as giving her the freedom to make her own mistakes, was all often regarded by others as not being 'caring' enough. I'd like to think that raising her to be an independent, critical thinker was a far better idea, but as I suspect you know, society as a whole doesn't 'get it' at times and I suspect that is even more true when it comes to INTJ females.
